Great Jimmy Breslin article

Thanks to Ann for posting the link to this article in the comments:
...a night or so ago, somebody finally tried a poll of cell phone users between the ages of 18 and 29. John Zogby conducted the survey in conjunction with Rock the Vote and the results showed Kerry at 55 percent and Bush at 40.

Then the Kerry people ran their own poll, which took a lot of work. It was the first time they had reached any cell phone users. The result was Kerry 59 and Bush 39.

Then I saw on television yesterday, and I hate to single him out, but he singled himself out, this fellow Bill Schneider on CNN and he is their election expert and he said that cell phones didn't mean anything. He's right. They didn't mean anything in 1950.

Oh, but these young people never vote, the tales read. They will this time, and because of a one-word issue.

Draft.

Every time Bush, or one of these generals he has, stands up and says there will be no military draft, everybody young figures this means there probably will be one by January, which will put them in the real battlegrounds. They rush to register, and then today they go to the polls to vote.

My Soapbox Moment, a.k.a. November Third

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
First of all, I'll just add my voice to the chorus -- Kerry will win, polls look good, turnout is key, blah blah blah.

But for some reason today, I remembered a speech President Clinton gave in late November 1999. It was just after "major combat operations" in Kosovo had ended, the US-led coalition was victorious, and Sean Hannity was looking stupid after giving aid and comfort to the enemy by criticizing Clinton on that war at every opportunity.

Clinton was speaking to a group of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, who as you may recall were being slaughtered in Milosevic's round of "ethnic cleansing." There, US soldiers really were treated as liberators, the war was managed well enough to limit casualties, and there was a good plan in place to win the peace. The crowd, despite what they had been through, was very happy to see the President.

"You can never forget the injustice that was done to you," Clinton said to the crowd. "No one can force you to forgive what was done to you. But you must try."

Clinton's words were not easily received, as he suspected. But they were the right ones.

I look at how polarized and how angry this country has become -- D's vs. R's, libs vs. cons vs neocons, doves vs. chickenhawks, blah blah blah. I look at how hateful and spiteful people act toward one another. We all hear it and we get wrapped up in it and we spin it and it gets worse. I readily admit that I'm as guilty of it as anyone.

I'm not saying, "go hug a freeper." But I am saying that the burden is on us, win OR lose, to understand that our country can't continue on its current course of division and spite. We have to reach out to those who don't agree with us and tell them we know this is their country too, and yes, their opinions matter, and the only reason we can't work together to solve tough problems is we don't try hard enough. I'm not saying we should cave on our principles, not even a bit. But progress begins with a single step, and I say our side should take it.

Why is the burden on us? Because we're better than all this. This shouldn't be about eye for an eye. It shouldn't be about stooping to someone else's level. It SHOULD be about healing the divisions that happened after 2000. Some would say after 1992. Some would say 1968. Whenever it started, it has to end. We have to heal.

I honestly think George Bush can't heal this country. The decisions he's made -- and the unilateral nature of them -- have just poisoned the well too much. If he wins (and no, I don't think he will, blah blah blah), I sincerely hope I'm wrong. I think, I hope, I pray John Kerry still has a chance to. I honestly feel he wants to.

No one can force us to forgive the Republicans for all the shit they've pulled. But on November third, we must try. Seriously, if you have a problem with that, go to Kosovo.

Why I think tomorrow could be a Kerry blow-out

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I, like many of you, sometimes have a hard time actually visualizing winning. Not that I don't think we'll win. I do. I just have a hard time believing that Bush will actually be gone in 24 hours. But I think he will be gone, and I don't think it will even be close. Here's why:

Rob in Baltimore has taken you guys through the numbers and the various scenarios, and he has Bush ahead in all of them. But what interests me particularly is the latest Zogby poll, cited below. Zogby says it's a dead tie, Kerry has all of Gore's states, Bush has all of Bush's states, and Florida is a dead heat. That would spell stalemate, but I think it spells a Kerry blowout. Why?

Because we're in a much better position than we were for years ago, and Bush isn't. Let me explain.

1. I personally know several Republicans who voted for Bush in 2000, and who are NOT voting for him now. I've heard tons of similar anecdotes from my friends about their Republican colleagues. There are also a few well-known conservatives like Andrew Sullivan who are now supporting Kerry, and conservative newspapers and magazines that have either endorsed Kerry or REFUSE to endorse Bush (the Detroit paper, the Economist, etc.)

2. I don't know ANYONE who was a Gore supporter in 2000 who isn't supporting Kerry in 2004. Not a soul. We can all name former Bush supporters who are NOT voting for Bush. I can't name a single former Gore supporter who isn't voting for Kerry. Bush has lost some of his support, Kerry hasn't lost a single voter.

3. But couldn't Bush make up the lost supporter elsewhere? Sure, but has he? The religious right? No. The LA Times recently revealed that Bush isn't polling nearly as well with the religious right as he had planned.

4. But what about the GOP getting more votes this time through increased voter turnout? Maybe. But there's every reason to believe Kerry will get at least as big an increase in turnout as Bush, so it's a wash - and actually, I'd say Kerry gets an even GREATER increased turnout as our people HATE Bush, and they don't want to see another election stolen. As many conservative commentators have noted, we hate him a lot more than they love him. That means our increase in turnout should be larger.

5. Finally, there's the Nader voters. He just isn't polling as high this time as in 2000. That means that even with all things being equal, we have more of the Nader voters than we had last time (and last time, at least, Nader took 2 from Gore for every 1 from Bush).

All of that means that even if the nation is still divided, even if the nation is still where it was 4 years ago, Kerry and the Democrats are still better off vis-a-vis 4 years ago than are the Republicans. For that reason, I have a feeling we're gonna whip Bush's ass tomorrow night. And it's not even gonna be close. Read the rest of this post...

More Christian right angst about Bush, and infighting

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Note this little missive from the religious right's propganda organ, the AgapePress. Not only does it show the Christian Coalition in a very poor light, but it also essentially touts a 3d party candidate who would most likely steal Bush voters rather than Kerry.

These guys don't publish ANYTHING without a reason, and they pretty much never publish anything that would help a Democrat. Still, now they're attacking another religious right group and telling their minions that there's another conservative out there who is THE MOST CHRISTIAN guy on the ticket. If that's not a subtle snub at Bush... There is clearly some estrangement going out between Bush and the religious right:
...A representative of a group that claims it has the most conservative platform of any U.S. political party feels that party has been snubbed by the Christian Coalition of America in its "Voter Guide." Constitution Party presidential candidate Michael Peroutka's name does not appear in the pre-election publication, and Constitution Party spokesman John Lofton is not happy about it. "We were shocked," he says, "to find out that the Christian Coalition not only did not list us as a presidential candidate, but when I called, they clearly were not interested in listing us at all." Lofton says the man responsible for the guide, Drew McKissick, did not think it was the coalition's job "to tell Christians who the most Christian candidate was" and said this was "a subjective judgment." The Christian Coalition Voter Guide only provides information on the two main candidates, a practice the group has always followed. Still that does not ease Lofton's mind; he calls the guide's omission of the Constitution Party "a shame" that destroys the Coalition's already limited credibility

First-hand report of voting mess in Florida

From someone I trust:
Well, the police are in riot gear. Protestors for both sides could explode. Lines are 5 hours long for early voters. The reason for the wait is for early voter registration verification. Tomorrow it shouldn't be that bad. The machines are very sensitive and if the voter doesn't mark the ballot in exactly the right spot, it has been defaulting to Bush. The polsters can recalibrate it, but they have to be advised. The lawyers are fighting, The Repubs are fighting where the end of the line is at the end of the time deadline, and are trying to suppress the amount of people that can enter after the deadline. I'm still waiting for my guys emails, and he has taken some pictures from his cell phone, but I can't receive them on mine so we are trying to figure out what to do. It's very hostile. Want lower oil prices? VOTE KERRY says the oil markets

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
So it looks like the oil markets think that a Kerry win means cheaper oil. Gee, ya think? From Reuters:
Oil prices fell sharply on Monday on speculation that a U.S. election win for Senator John Kerry could ease the geopolitical friction that has helped fuel this year's record-breaking rally.

U.S. light crude settled down $1.63 to $50.13 after diving as low as $49.30 a barrel, breaking below $50 the first time in nearly a month. U.S. crude peaked a week ago at $55.67 a barrel.

In London, Brent crude lost $1.92 to $47.06 a barrel.

Energy analysts said a win for the challenger Kerry in Tuesday's U.S. presidential election could mean lower crude prices than if President Bush (news - web sites) were reelected. Latest opinion polls can barely separate the two.
What's that? The oil markets think John Kerry can bring a fresh start to the war in Iraq? Sounds good to me. Read the rest of this post...

More evidence gay marriage was trumped up just to win votes

The Republicans are just a bunch of hateful hateful people. It's disgusting and an insult to the American people. Let's beat them back tomorrow and shut them up once and for all. From AP:
Some Michigan voters have received phone calls falsely claiming that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry would make gay marriage legal, Kerry's Michigan campaign said Monday.

Both Kerry and his running mate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, oppose gay marriage and say marriage should be limited to a man and a woman. Kerry has said he supports civil unions.

In a recording of a phone call played for The Associated Press, a young woman says: 'When you vote this Tuesday remember to legalize gay marriage by supporting John Kerry. We need John Kerry in order to make gay marriage legal for our city. Gay marriage is a right we all want. It's a basic Democrat principle. It's time to move forward and be progressive. Without John Kerry, George Bush will stop gay marriage. That's why we need Kerry. So Tuesday, stand up for gay marriage by supporting John Kerry.'
Gee, think that these calls are going out to Democrats? Probably not.

Then they vote on whether to keep the ballot or not. I can't believe they're doing this again. Now I'm Scared Again

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
For a year, I've been preaching that Bush has no natural base of support -- he hasn't satisfied the power-mad religious right (hence Pat Robertson's public dig at Bush), he has infuriated fiscal conservatives with his free-spending ways and he's dismayed strong-on-defense conservatives by ignoring the advice of his top military advisers almost every step of the way and bungling the peace in Iraq.

So why am I suddenly freaking out all over again? Some polls show Bush gaining ground from last weekend to this -- God knows why. And the constant drumbeat that the election is thisclose has me doubting my belief that 10 million new registered voters, waves of young people who can't be polled (cell phones) and who favor Kerry to a strong degree, and the expected high turnout (which is always bad for an incumbent) are maybe not enough.

DON'T YOU DARE GO TO THE POLLS ALONE. If you go alone, you are wasting an opportunity. Go before work and stay as long as it takes to vote and BRING A FRIEND. Talk to coworkers today about meeting up at the polls and grabbing a coffee or doughnut to stand in line. It's more fun and you'll make sure that even the people who swear they're gonna vote actually vote. Then take more friends on your lunch break on Tuesday. (They don't know you're just going along for the fun.) Then badger more friends to meet you after work at the polls as well. TURNOUT. TURNOUT. TURNOUT. The higher the turnout, the better for Kerry. Pollsters are giddy with the possibility that 60% of eligible voters might actually vote, an extremely high number. But anyone who DOESN'T vote should be ashamed of themselves. Since you're reading this blog, you're already a lot more informed and involved and passionate than most people and you HAVE to light a fire under those who care but can get too busy to bother.

I don't mind being scared on Monday and Tuesday. I just don't want to be scared on Wednesday. Somebody tell me we're gonna win.

REHNQUIST MUCH SICKER THAN INITIAL REPORTS SUGGESTED

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
MUCH sicker. From AP:Chief
Justice William H. Rehnquist disclosed Monday that he's undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for thyroid cancer and said he is delaying his expected return to the Supreme Court, a sign he may have a more serious form of the illness.

Rehnquist had planned to join fellow justices when they were back on the bench after a two-week break. But instead he issued a statement saying "at the suggestion of my doctors, (I) am continuing to recuperate at home."

Rehnquist was released from a Maryland hospital last Friday after undergoing surgery to have a tube inserted in his throat to help his breathing.

...

Dr. Ann M. Gillenwater of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston said that the combination of chemotherapy and radiation is the normal treatment for anaplastic thyroid cancer, a more serious type.

Rehnquist had been hoarse for several weeks before his hospitalization at the hospital in suburban Bethesda, Md. on Oct. 22. He had the tracheotomy a day later.
Rehnquist, a conservative who has been on the court since 1972 and chief justice since 1986, has had other health problems including chronic back pain and a torn leg tendon that required surgery.

In the statement, Rehnquist said he was receiving outpatient radiation and chemotherapy. Cancer of the thyroid, a gland in the neck that produces hormones to help regulate the body's use of energy, is generally treatable but can be more aggressive in older people.

...

Rehnquist left his town house outside Washington in a wheelchair on Monday morning. Journalists were kept on the sidewalk and unable to see much as aides helped the chief justice into a limousine.

The combination of radiation and chemotherapy raises the suspicion that Rehnquist's cancer is not one of the common types that are usually easily treatable, said Dr. Joseph Geradts of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.

The most common types are papillary and follicular cancer, and they are generally responsive to radioactive iodine, Geradts said. Chemotherapy could be needed if it is the more aggressive form, called anaplastic, he said.

He noted that the gland is often removed as part of cancer treatment, but in cases of anaplastic cancer the thyroid sometimes cannot be readily removed.

The presence of a tracheotomy to ease Rehnquist's breathing also might indicate anaplastic cancer, Geradts said, since that form can squeeze the trachea.

Final CNN/USA Today/Gallup showdown state polls underscore how close the presidential election between President George W. Bush and Democratic candidate John Kerry is likely to be. The polls show mixed results in six of the most hotly contested states -- with Kerry leading in one state (Minnesota), Bush leading in one (Wisconsin), and the results of four others (Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida) within the polls' margins of error. The polls were mostly conducted between Wednesday and Saturday, with polling in Ohio and Pennsylvania continuing into Sunday.

Final Gallup Numbers: It's a tie!

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
From Gallup:
Two days before the election, the final CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll shows a dead heat in the presidential race, with President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry each receiving 49% support among likely voters in the final allocated estimate. Independent candidate Ralph Nader garners 1% of the vote, and all other candidates an additional 1%.

The poll was conducted Oct. 29-31 among 2,014 national adults and includes 1,573 likely voters, and was weighted to reflect an estimated voter turnout of 60%. The final numbers also reflect Gallup's judgment of how undecided voters will cast their ballots.

Before allocation of the undecided vote, Gallup's likely voter model shows Bush ahead by two points, 49% to 47%, while the results among all registered voters show Kerry with a two-point lead, 48% to 46%.

What drives me nuts about the story of the tons of explosives being taken from one site is the implication that it's the only one when there are COUNTLESS stories of screw-ups. The hundreds of tons from the one site, the nuclear technology looted over days (or weeks or months) from another site that we found about two weeks ago and now this.

"In a lengthy Oct. 6 report summarizing a fruitless search for banned weapons in Iraq, the inspectors known as the Iraq Survey Group disclosed that widespread looting occurred at Muthanna after the fall of the Iraqi capital in April 2003.

"An annex of the 985-page report said every United Nations-sealed location at the desert installation had been breached in the looting spree, and "materials and equipment were removed."

"Bunker 2 at Muthanna State Establishment, once Iraq's central chemical weapons production site, was put under the control of the United Nations in early 1991 after it was damaged by an American bomb in the Persian Gulf war. At the time, Iraq said 2,500 sarin-filled artillery rockets had been stored there."
