Assemblywoman L. Grace Spencer, a Newark Democrat who owns a Pomeranian named A.J. along with five cats and a rabbit, has introduced a bill to require motorists to secure dogs and felines with a seatbelt-like harness if they’re not being transported in crates. Violators would get a $25 ticket that might escalate to an animal-cruelty charge with a fine of as much as $1,000 in extreme cases, such as having an unrestrained pet in the bed of a pickup.Read the rest of this post...
Securing animals is “a bigger issue than people realize,” said Spencer, 44, a liability-law attorney. She said her measure will protect motorists and animals alike.
“We didn’t think that texting was so big of an issue until people started dying,” she said.

NJ to mandate doggie seat belts?
Good idea or more government intrusion? When I had a car and a dog, I don't recall it being an issue though that's not to say it can't be. Having a dog in the front seat or even on the driver's lap has the potential to be a major problem, as a fireman mentions inside the link.

Morning roar and a severe case of bed-head
Because not everything is about politics.
This is how I'm greeted each morning. As soon as Sasha thinks she senses I'm awake, she peeks out from under the comforter and I get the double-pawed pounce/plop on my chest, and if the petting doesn't commence quickly, the whining begins...
Oh, so I mentioned that we'll be launching AMERICAblog 3.0 (or possibly 2.5) in about a week or so, if all goes well. And one of the new things we'll launching is a regular post, perhaps 3 times a week (maybe more), of your pets photos. We already have the Flickr embed of your pet photos on the side of the site, but this will be a regular feature in which I write a post highlighting one of your pets, including a photo (or two), and a story about your pet. The story can be whatever you like - funny, sad, touching - just tell me something interesting about your current or former pet and I'll start posting the stories on the blog, in addition to adding them of course to the Flickr box.
Send us your pet's photo, and a paragraph or so about them, to: photos@americablog.com
And put "pet" in the subject line.

Video: Stunning dolphin footage
Some guys were fishing, then realized they were being followed by some dolphins, so they lowered a camera into the sea to see if they could catch the dolphins on film. Here's what they found. The dolphins appear about a minute into the film. I have to admit, the video almost looks fake.

Dog nearly dies eating mushrooms, owners face $10k in medical bills
Quite a moving story. From CBS New York (they have a video of the news broadcast they did on this):

Sandy, a 13-week-old Golden Retriever, was rushed to the East End Veterinary Emergency Center after eating mushrooms from her backyard, CBS 2′s Carolyn Gusoff reported. The owners have set up a Facebook page for Sandy, and are asking for donations. You can donate via this site. They're even happy to have the donations sent directly to the vet, so that, along with the CBS story, makes me think this is legit. They posted a short, and heartbreaking video of the dog at the vet while she was still touch and go:
“We spent four days not sure she would make it,” said Sandy’s owner, Richard D’Alsace, of Manorville.
D’Alsace found mushrooms in his puppy’s mouth but didn’t think they were poisonous. By morning Sandy was vomiting and on the verge of kidney and liver failure, Gusoff reported
“She was practically on the verge of death,” said Dr. Gal Vatash of East End Veterinary Emergency Center.
After 10 days of blood transfusions and medication, Sandy is now well enough to go home. But the danger remains: poisonous mushrooms grow everywhere.

Never before seen video of Orca attack at Sea World just released
It gets wild about 1:30 into the video. This was just released via FOIA request. It's of a 2006 attack where an Orca grabbed a trainer's foot and pulled him under. He finally got free, but has wounds to both feed, including some breaks. I've got the video and screen captures below.
The video is really quite horrifying but also fascinating. The man gets pulled under, then after a while the animal resurfaces and stays at the surface for a while, still holding his foot in its mouth. He keeps patting the animal, trying to calm it, occasionally the Orca pulls him under again, as his foot is still in its mouth, then you notice from a different camera angle that his foot is free yet he's still patting the animal. It's not clear why until you realize that he's seems to be slowly pushing the animal towards the entry ramp to the pool. Just as he gets close enough, he releases the Orca then runs for his life to get out of the pool. It's amazing.
Here's the video, then some screen caps for those who may not wish to watch the entire video:
Screen captures:

Finally, the animal and trainer are on the surface - you finally realize at one point that his foot is free.

The trainer makes a break for it, just as the orca realizes and starts to turn around.

The trainer swims frantically for the edge of the pool, the orca now clearly following him.

He gets to the edge of the pool, orca still coming.

Another trainer reaches out to help him as he frantically tries to get out of the pool with a broken foot, the orca is now at the edge of the pool, but diving.

He's out, the orca has moved on.

Video: Dog leans out car window, tries to bite passing cars
My little Sasha is one step away from being this dog. (She has this little hang up about motorcycles.) This is a quick and simple video that's absolutely hysterical, and if you know dogs, absolutely understandable.

Video: Doberman and kitten play, absolutely adorable
And God bless em, they didn't add any stupid music to go with the video. This is one of the cutest things I've ever seen. (Okay, it might not look that cute from the preview image! LOL Seriously, watch this, it's wonderful.)

Video: Parents scare kid with life-sized robot dinosaur
I just don't understand these videos. And I've never really understood practical jokes. They're not funny to the person they're done to - they're usually quite mean. And that one finds "mean" funny doesn't strike me as particularly nice. In this video, the parents decide to convince their two year old that something is going to kill him. He knows quite well what a dinosaur is, and that they eat people. So how is this just a cute joke and not, quite literally, parents putting a kid, psychologically at least, into a near death experience?
And before anyone poo-poos my analysis - explain to me how this kid wasn't just convinced that he was about to die. Then explain to me how that doesn't risk scarring the kid? I'm just increasing finding a lot of these videos kind of sick. Just me?

Obama campaign highlighting the First Pet to embarrass Romney
And they should. While it might look petty, it says something about a man, the way he trust the most vulnerable among us (so the saying goes). I remember my uncle, who was Greece's UN ambassador at the time, telling me that you can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats animals. And I think it's very true. Watch someone interacting with a child, or a pet - especially one they meet for the first time. It speaks volumes.

Spain's king Juan Carlos is a cowardly elephant hunter
Much like the lowlife CEO of GoDaddy, Juan Carlos also likes to pay big money to kill elephants in Africa. I am admittedly not a hunter but generally have no issue with people hunting what they eat. Killing one of the "Big Five" in Africa these days is mostly the domain of the ultra rich who spend tens of thousands of dollars to kill.
I traveled through Southern Africa and visited dozens of game parks throughout the region. Along the way I bumped into a number of these hunters and heard about the industry from locals. It's sickening. Perhaps the most disgusting story was how they used old lions that were sold off from zoos because they were in bad shape and easier to kill. If the hunter was a bad shot, the guides would drug the animals so they were even easier to kill.
We really don't know how good of a shot Juan Carlos may be, but what is certain is that this type of hunting is known for his type taking advantage of local communities who are need of money. When you have kings money, it's easy to throw around and participate in the seediest of seedy industries. Even worse, why is the king throwing around such cash on such a stupid event during this economic crisis in Spain? It's not macho, it's cowardly and abusive. Read the rest of this post...
