How Limbaugh and Beck's propaganda works

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I am just completing some interior renovations and about to start some exterior work and so was talking to a couple of contractors. The first told me a conspiracy theory a friend of a friend had told him from the Rush Limbaugh show, whereby the government was alleged to be requiring spy cameras in every HD TV set. I have not been able to track down what Limbaugh might have said to have triggered this claim, but the 'Chinese whispers' effect is instrumental in the workings of this type of propaganda. The speaker makes a claim that is hedged with qualifications and caveats knowing that their words will be repeated without them.

The second conspiracy theory involved a story on Glenn Beck's site about a government 'plan' to ban PVC pipe. The headline has a question mark but it is clear that the reader is intended to believe this is a real proposal.

Banning PVC pipe in home building probably isn't much of a concern to most people but it would certainly worry the people in the building trade most of whom are the blue collar males who are the target audience for Beck and Limbaugh.

The propaganda follows a pattern that will be familiar to anyone who has watched Beck's show. First there is an incredibly detailed introduction that is designed to prove to the reader that the writer is an authority on the subject by stating a long list of essentially irrelevant facts that could be found on wikipedia. Next there comes a sequence of paragraphs that juxtapose facts in a way that is essentially irrelevant to the point but intended to create an association in the reader's mind. The big lie must be preceded by an advance guard of spurious but hard to check claims designed to distract attention from the blatant misrepresentation to follow:

First off, LEED certification is not cheap. Design and construction review of a new building can cost up to $27,500. In fact, in 2009, the USGBC made over $74 million from accreditation, membership dues, and certification fees. The non-profit organization reported $53 million in net assets at the end of that year.
It $27K for LEED certification expensive or cheap? It all depends on the cost of the building and the planning considerations. $27K would be rather expensive for a single residential building and a rounding error for a developer building an office block or a 100 unit residential community.

Next comes a completely irrelevant statistic:
The extent to which the federal government subsidizes the USGBC is made clear when you realize the amount of LEED-certified building space in Washington, DC, which has more LEED-certified space on a per-capita basis than in any of the 50 states. Over 18.9 million square feet, or 31.5 square feet per resident, is LEED certified in the Washington, DC; the closest state is Colorado, with 2.7 square feet per person.
Does it really make sense to compare a city to a state? Isn't it rather likely that Manhattan, Chicago and Boston have more LEED certified office space per capita than any of the 50 states as well?

Finally, after the preamble has prepared the reader and exhausted their fact checking efforts we get to the money shot, a statement that is clearly designed to get the reader whose livelihood depends on building houses worried:
And this brings us all the way back to PVC. As first mentioned, the GSA is considering new USGBC regulations that include the “avoidance” of the popular material.

As the proposal states: The intent is to “decrease the concentrations of chemical contaminants that can damage air quality, human health, productivity, and the environment.” And to this end, LEED will certify whoever uses products or materials “that do not contain intentionally added substances present in the end product.” This includes Polyvinyl chloride.
OK so assuming that the government is not intending to shut down the construction industry by banning PVC pipe, what is really going on?

What is really happening is that the LEED program has a 'pilot program' that developers can use to secure 'extra credit'. Participating a pilot is optional and many pilots list many different ways to score the credit. The pilot at issue here is Pilot Credit 54 "Avoidance of Chemicals of Concern". The criteria are hardly very exacting:
Use a minimum of 20%, by cost, of at least 3 building product and material types
meeting one of the options below
The option then lists a series of highly toxic materials; lead, mercury cadmium and so on. PVC isn't even in the list. So these are requirements that only apply to 20% of the building materials costs. A PVC building floating on a lake of mercury could qualify for the pilot credit provided at least 20% of the cost was other materials. I don't know how much my plumber spent on PVC pipe but I doubt it added up to more than a few hundred bucks. It certainly didn't amount to 80%.

PVC only appears in 'Option 2' which is an alternative option within the pilot and the wording is rather obscure:
Meet the requirements of Option 1.AND Use third party certified building products and materials that do not contain intentionally added substances present in the end product over the reporting thresholds
below. Calculate compliant building products and materials at twice the cost.
What this appears to say is that if your materials don't contain PVC or the other substances in concentrations higher than those allowed they count double. So you only need to source 10% of your components from these sources.

I can't see how a developer would have a problem meeting the requirements. My biggest building material expenses were concrete, framing lumber and plywood. The real challenge would be documenting that the requirements were met.

Remember that LEED is an optional program designed to illustrate best of breed, it is not regulation. This proposal isn't even a proposal for a LEED requirement. If the pilot requirements are unmeetable, nobody is going to meet them. If nobody meets them, the pilot proposals are unlikely to even become a LEED requirement.

This position is reinforced by a series of statements by what are cited as 'experts' but are really spokespersons for the PVC industry:
Allen Blakey, vice president of Industry and Government Affairs for the Vinyl Institute, says his organization is “astonished to see PVC added to the USGBC’s list of chemicals to avoid,” the report adds. According to Blakey, PVC is a material that’s been studied for some time by the USGBC itself.
And finally the writer heads off into crazy loopsville:
So why is LEED trying to blacklist the material?

Well, maybe it’s important to understand a little bit more about LEED’s “founding founder” Robert Watson, a man who infamously said “Buildings are far and away the worst thing humans do to the environment.”
This are not the ravings of a lunatic, they are the work of a deliberate, cynical propagandist. Deconstructing the propaganda is really not hard but it does require some critical thinking skills. The type of skills that Republicans would rather not see taught in schools.

First the reader needs to be able to identify the small set of factual statements that are actually relevant. Next the reader has to fact check the key claims by examining the original sources. In this case the key source is a document that appears to be written by lawyers for lawyers but even a quick glance demonstrates that it is being misrepresented. Finally the reader has to do a bit of work with Google to find the original source for the out of context quote. This is what I found:
Lest we forget. "Buildings are far and away the worst thing humans do to the environment," Rob Watson of the Natural Resources Defense Council tells Grist magazine (November 25). "All of the buildings in the U.S. consume more than twice as much energy as all of the cars in the country." Chicago has a building that does much better--the Chicago Center for Green Technology, at 445 N. Sacramento, is the third building in the country to receive a "platinum" rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Why is the Washington Post publishing conspiracy nut Glenn Beck as a "religious voice"?

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I mean come on, the guy was too far out there for Fox, and the Washington Post is treating him like he's some mainstream priest on their religion page?  Why is he a guest voice on the religion page at all?  None of the hate group leaders like Tony Perkins available, who the Post likes to normalize every chance they can get?  Or is this about Glenn Beck being a sure-fire chance to rile folks up and get the Post, known to be in hard financial times, some much-needed page views?

Well, don't count on me to link to this kind of trash.

Beck even went so far as to claim that President Obama's having adopted Mitt Romney's policy of making contraceptives available under employer health insurance plans is just like anti-semitism.  Uh huh.  Funny thing for a Mormon to claim - and Glenn Beck proudly proclaims his Mormon faith at the beginning of the article (presumably that's his only bona fide to even be published as a guest voice on a religious page, that he has a faith) - that they're just like persecuted Jews.

As a Mormon, Beck is likely familiar with the face of anti-semitism. The Mormons have been busy harassing Jews for decades, when they're not busy persecuting gays, African-Americans, or women.  The Mormons have been secretly converting dead people of all faiths to Mormonism, often without the knowledge, nor consent, of their immediate non-Mormon relatives.  The Mormons have taken a special fancy to going after the souls of Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.  Though it's not just Jews.  The Mormons were kind enough to include Hitler and Stalin alongside the Jews each of them loathed, prompting Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel to demand public accountability from America's most famous Mormon, Mitt Romney.  None is forthcoming.

Considering the Mormons' history of trying to use the wheels of government to legislatively jam their faith down the throats of every American, it takes a lot of chutzpah for Glenn Beck to claim that he, as a Mormon, is simply interested in defending freedom of religion.

Since most Catholics agree with President Obama on this issue, rather than their own bishops (or Glenn Beck), just whose freedom are they fighting for? Read the rest of this post...

Glenn Beck’s favorite advertiser faces 19 fraud charges

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Executives at Glenn Beck's favorite advertiser face 19 counts of fraud relating to alleged 'bait and switch' tactics the firm used to peddle overpriced gold coins with a much lower gold content in place of the gold bullion the customers were calling to buy.

The coins were priced at roughly twice the market value of the gold. Tricks used to make the switch included warning that the government might confiscate bullion but gold coins would be immune. This is of course a nonsensical fear since the US dollar has not been pegged to the gold price since the 1970s. Confiscating gold as FDR did in 1933 would have no effect on the dollar today, and in any case the 'numismatic' coins sold by Goldline are not rare and would likely have been included in the 1933 confiscation order.

The price of gold is trending upwards again but remains below its peak of a few months ago, and well below its 1980 peak in the wake of the Iranian election and the invasion of Afghanistan. Investors in gold futures may have made some money, but even with the tremendous run that gold has had in the past five years, almost no Goldline customers have seen a profit on their 'investment' yet.

Demand for the yellow shiny metal may enjoy another spike as disturbances spread to Syria and Iran, or it may collapse as the various stashes built up by Gadaffi and his henchmen are discovered and quietly liquidated. In either case gold is pure speculation, it is not an investment. People create wealth, machinery creates wealth, corporations create wealth -- gold creates nothing. Read the rest of this post...

Glenn Beck: Hurricane Irene "a blessing"

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
What is it with right wing extremists who see catastrophic events as "blessings?" CNN:
How many warnings do you think you’re going to get, and how many warnings do you deserve? This hurricane that is coming thorough the East Coast, for anyone who’s in the East Coast and has been listening to me say ‘Food storage!’ ‘Be prepared!’

… If you’ve waited, this hurricane is a blessing. It is a blessing. It is God reminding you — as was the earthquake last week — it’s God reminding you you’re not in control. Things can happen. Be prepared and be someone who can help others so when disaster strikes, God forbid, you’re not panicking.

Glenn Beck: Murdered Norwegian campers were like Hitler Youth

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Absolutely despicable, but we knew that already.
Glenn Beck, the rightwing US broadcaster and Tea Party favourite, has compared those who were massacred on the Norwegian island of Utøya to the Nazi party's youth wing.

"There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like the Hitler youth, or, whatever. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics. Disturbing," said Beck on his syndicated radio show.

The comments were condemned by Torbjørn Eriksen, a former press secretary to Jens Stoltenberg, Norway's prime minister.

Glenn Beck cost Fox $40m in advertising

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Media Matters:
How much has the advertising exodus cost Fox News? In September 2009, ColorForChange, which was instrumental in launching the Beck ad boycott, published its analysis. Based on advertising rates it concluded that Glenn Beck was bringing in approximately $600,000 less per-week (or approximately $2.4 million per-month), than it was before the boycott began. Keep in mind, that’s when 50 or 60 advertisers had jumped ship. Today, that number hovers between 300-400.

Using that $2.4 million per month estimate, since the fall of 2009, it’s possible the ad-starved Beck show booked nearly $43 million less than it would have if it weren’t facing a boycott. $43 million.

Glenn Beck suggests Soros connected with Japan disaster, NZ earthquake, Ivory Coast civil war, Hamas, a union mtg, and the shooting of a poet's son in Mexico

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Actually, my title doesn't do this justice. He's claiming that all the issues are related to each other - they're not "isolated incidents."

The guy is nuts, or the biggest con man out there nowadays.  You have to wonder whether his apocalyptic meanderings are part of the reason Fox isn't renewing his contract.  Did Fox worry that some nutjob, convinced the world was going to end, might eventually do something crazy?  Beck already has the inspiration of one violent nutjob, at least, under his belt, according to Media Matters.

Today Beck went off about the following eight stories, and claimed they're all not "isolated incidents."

1. Shooting of a son of a poet in Mexico.
2. A gathering of unions at the Peace Arch.
3. George Soros had a meeting about Breton Woods III.
4. Ivory Coast is having trouble.
5. Hamas is doing something (he didn't explain what).
6. Something "important" happened in France that you need to know about (again, what?).
7. The crisis in Japan (post tsunami/earthquake/nuclear disaster).
8. Earthquake in NZ.

Here's what he said after listing the above stories:
"This is a global time we live in.  If you look at all of these stories just as one isolated incident, you will of course say 'it's nuts.'  What are you making such a big deal out of it.  But if you learn to look at the world like this [points to crazy chalkboard with all the above incidents marked on it] what you will see coming is going to sweep the world here [points to Africa], then here [Europe], then here [North America].  And it's gonna get faster and faster."

Glenn Beck's TV show going off the air

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
It's hard to decipher the suspiciously perky press release.
Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck's production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News' digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.
They're making it sound all happy-happy, but as we learned a month ago, Fox News officials were already talking about "life after Beck" in view of his declining ratings.
Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the “Restoring Honor” rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox — a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox.
[T]he erosion is significant enough that Fox News officials are willing to say — anonymously, of course; they don’t want to be identified as criticizing the talent — that they are looking at the end of his contract in December and contemplating life without Mr. Beck.
As are we all. Read the rest of this post...

Glenn Beck proves that O'Keefe's NPR video is basically a fraud

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
We should have all seen this one coming. Another conservative "gotcha!" video, and another case of a conservative editing the video to make it look like the "liberal" was saying things he shouldn't. Except that, as usual, the video was edited to make it look like the "liberal" was saying things he actually didn't say. I don't k now what to make of it being Glenn Beck's Web site that exposes this, other than to say perhaps this is O'Keefe's "Nixon goes to China" moment. If a raving conservative finds that raving conservative basically lied, then it's hard to refute the source.

Here's one example - where the NPR exec is supposedly amused that the Web site of the people he's meeting promotes "acceptance of Sharia" worldwide. What the video shows is that the exec was amused about something totally unrelated, but O'Keefe spliced the video to make it seem like the NPR guy was amused about the Sharia. This is classic for the far right, mixing and matching facts to "prove" something that isn't true - a tactic usually reserved for the religious right hate groups.

Beck's site goes on to show how at one point, when the NPR exec was supposedly calling the Tea Party "seriously racist," he was in fact quoting a GOP ambassador. But O'Keefe cut the part showing that the NPR exec was simply quoting a Republican, and made it seem like it was hit quote.

The Republicans have been caught red-handed, lying in order to try to cut NPR funding. Read the rest of this post...

Glenn Beck has lost over 1/3 of his audience on Fox

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Though he had a lot of viewers to start with, so he's still powerful. Also, as the article notes, he has an interesting power base aside from his show on FOX, what with his radio show, books and public appearances. Still, it's nice to see that the paranoid schizophrenic isn't ten feet tall.

NYT:
Mr. Beck, a conservative Jeremiah and talk-radio phenomenon, burst into television prominence in 2009 by taking the forsaken 5 p.m. slot on Fox News and turning it into a juggernaut. A conjurer of conspiracies who spotted sedition everywhere he looked, Mr. Beck struck a big chord and ended up on the cover of Time magazine and The New York Times Magazine, and held rallies all over the country that were mobbed with acolytes. He achieved unheard-of ratings, swamped the competition and at times seemed to threaten the dominion of Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity at Fox.

But a funny thing happened on the way from the revolution. Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the “Restoring Honor” rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox — a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox. True, he fell from the great heights of the health care debate in January 2010, but there has been worrisome erosion — more than one million viewers — especially in the younger demographic.

He still has numbers that just about any cable news host would envy and, with about two million viewers a night, outdraws all his competition combined. But the erosion is significant enough that Fox News officials are willing to say — anonymously, of course; they don’t want to be identified as criticizing the talent — that they are looking at the end of his contract in December and contemplating life without Mr. Beck.

College professor receives death threats after being attacked relentlessly Glenn Beck

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
She's the enemy of the Constitution and planning to bring about the collapse of our entire nation, but please don't anyone try to hurt her. Message received.
On his daily radio and television shows, Glenn Beck has elevated once-obscure conservative thinkers onto best-seller lists. Recently, he has elevated a 78-year-old liberal academic to celebrity of a different sort, in a way that some say is endangering her life.

Frances Fox Piven, a City University of New York professor, has been a primary character in Mr. Beck’s warnings about a progressive take-down of America. Ms. Piven, Mr. Beck says, is responsible for a plan to “intentionally collapse our economic system.”

Her name has become a kind of shorthand for “enemy” on Mr. Beck’s Fox News Channel program, which is watched by more than 2 million people, and on one of his Web sites, The Blaze. This week, Mr. Beck suggested on television that she was an enemy of the Constitution.

Never mind that Ms. Piven’s radical plan to help poor people was published 45 years ago, when Mr. Beck was a toddler. Anonymous visitors to his Web site have called for her death, and some, she said, have contacted her directly via e-mail.

Media Matters: How the right-wing media and Glenn Beck's chalkboard drove Byron Williams to plot assassination

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
A Media Matters exclusive with the man who was on his way to shoot up the ACLU and the Tides Foundation. Turns out he's a huge Glenn Beck fan.
Now, in exclusive interviews and written correspondence with journalist John Hamilton, Williams speaks for himself. He asks Hamilton to be his "media advocate" and repeatedly instructs him to watch specific broadcasts of Beck's show for information on the conspiracy theory that drove him over the edge: an intricate plot involving Barack Obama, philanthropist George Soros, a Brazilian oil company, and the BP disaster.

Williams also points to other media figures -- right-wing propagandist David Horowitz, and Internet conspiracist and repeated Fox News guest Alex Jones -- as key sources of information to inspire his "revolution."

In a separate exchange with Examiner.com's Ed Walsh, Williams sought to defend Beck from "Obama and the liberals," whom he said are afraid of Beck "because he often exposes things that are simply forbidden in news." Williams said that Beck advocates non-violence and that he had already researched the conspiracy theories that informed his alleged plot -- before seeing them "confirm[ed]" on Beck's show.

Similarly, Williams tells Hamilton that "Beck would never say anything about a conspiracy, would never advocate violence. He'll never do anything ... of this nature. But he'll give you every ounce of evidence that you could possibly need."
Back at the Santa Rita Jail, Byron again weighs in on Beck. "You know, I'll tell you," he says, "Beck is gonna deny everything about violent approach and deny everything about conspiracies, but he'll give you every reason to believe it. He's protecting himself, and you can't blame him for that. So, I understand what he's doing."

Media Matters: US domestic terror suspect is a big fan of Glenn Beck

Well isn't that surprising.
This past summer, as the SF Chronicle reported at the time, a convicted felon named Byron Williams "loaded up his mother's Toyota Tundra with guns, strapped on his body armor and headed to San Francisco...with one thing in mind: to kill workers" at the ACLU and the Tides Foundation, hoping to "start a revolution."
MEDIA MATTERS: When you talk about how conservative values have been lost in this country you were talking before about the liberal media. You were saying maybe Fox was the exception. You think Fox is worthwhile?

BYRON WILLIAMS: Well, I'm not gonna say anyone is worthwhile. But [unintelligible] I would've never started watching Fox if it wasn't for the fact that Beck was on there. And it was the things that he did, it was the things he exposed that blew my mind. I said, well, nobody does this.

Hilter, Obama and Marx - oh my!

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Dana Milbank has a nice article in today's Washington Post about Glenn Beck's Hitler fetish. Below he explains who Beck tried to link Obama to... well... it isn't terribly clear.
And finally, on Sept. 18, 2009, Beck delivered proof of the nefarious link between the two presidents: the "Tree of Revolution."

The tree, which Beck illustrated on his ever-present chalkboard, looked to be a sturdy oak. Buried where the trunk sat was Wilson. To the left of Wilson, also in the roots, was Che Guevara, the Marxist revolutionary. To the right of Wilson was Saul Alinsky, the late social radical. Farther up the trunk was SDS -- Students for a Democratic Society, a group that protested the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Above SDS were the words "Cloward and Piven," an obscure reference to two Columbia University academics who in 1966 wrote a Nation magazine article proposing a radical anti-poverty strategy that Beck believes is the basis of an enduring leftist conspiracy to destroy the American economy.
He then unveiled more elements of the arboreal conspiracy: The Apollo Alliance, funded by Soros, wrote Obama's stimulus bill! Apollo's Jeff Jones, along with Obama friend Ayers, "came right from SDS," which is "code language for Marxism," and formed the Weather Underground, responsible for "blowing up the Pentagon"! (Actually, the group blew up a bathroom, but still . . .) ACORN founder Wade Rathke is connected to SEIU because "his brother Dale is at SEIU, we think." (SEIU denies this, and there is no evidence for it.) The whole bunch was inspired by Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, who wanted to "get everyone on welfare, just start racking up the bills so the American financial system would eventually collapse."

In summary, Woodrow Wilson mated with an Argentine revolutionary and a Chicago radical, gave birth to a 1960s antiwar group and a pair of Columbia academics, who in turn spawned ACORN, the SEIU, the Apollo Alliance, the Weather Underground, George Soros -- and Barack Obama.

Beck and Palin cash in on 9/11

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
What patriot doesn't try to raise money on the backs of thousands of dead Americans? Surely just a coincidence.
The two conservative rock-stars are set to appear together in Alaska on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in an event that costs a minimum of $65 to attend.

"We can count on Glenn to make the night interesting and inspiring, and I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget,'" said Palin on her Facebook page earlier this week. "Hope to see you there!"

But in sharp contrast to the free event in Washington last month, tickets to this latest Palin-Beck affair run as high as $225 – a price tag that some Democrats are making hay about given the somber timing of the event.

But Christopher Cox, the Anchorage-based promoter of the event, told the Anchorage Daily News the date is purely coincidental and was originally scheduled for a week earlier.
