Pam's House Blend has a great piece on WHY it is that class action lawsuits came to be what they are today - a significant consumer protection. Phrases like "risk assessment" aren't about risks to the consumer, they are risks that companies calculate to determine how safe they REALLY need to make a product to make money above and beyond any lawsuits they may encounter. Without the threat of large class action suits, how much extra money are manufacturers really going to spend on consumer protection? Let history be the judge - Pam has great info collected on the Ford Pinto for those of you too young to remember. Check it out.
