"Gross extravagance" or "good value"?

I can't even believe such a discussion is happening in 2006 about a the British royal family. I'd say "waste of space" or perhaps "spongers of the nation" or even just plain old "embarrassment" but then again I'm not really into ruling families, whether they be in the UK, US or anywhere.
