British PM supports gay marriage in the UK

In his speech to the Conservative Party conference, British Prime Minister David Cameron said:

"I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I'm a Conservative"
And the reaction from his audience? Cheers. The UK has had civil partnerships since 2004, and now all three mainstream parties have the introduction of gay marriage as a policy. How would the equivalent speech be received at a Republican convention?
