Often it's someone or something you'd never expect. But this year, I'm thinking it might just be Nancy Pelosi. Not exclusively for who she is, but rather for what she represents. The first female Speaker. The return of Democratic control, en masse, to Washington after 14 years. The demise of George Bush and the Republican party. The overbearing and growing presence and impact of the Iraq disaster on national politics, and the world. Pelosi's return represents all of those things. So does Harry Reid's, and they may just name both of them (or collectively the Democratic Congress). Or they may not. TIME could always pick Iraq.
