Considering the pork-laden energy bill that slathered on corporate welfare to the oil industry, I don't know how me made it through the speech without choking. Telling others to end government subsidies and tariffs? From the guy who bailed out a failing steel industry which launched his love-affair with the world? Bush's corporate welfare is hardly limited to the oil business though, as he's an equal opportunity corporate welfare-giver whether you are rich, super-rich or any global business looking to build a new trust without fear of government intervention.
Just ask his friends in the tobacco industry, pharmaceutical industry, big agriculture, Boeing, etc. I would love to hear what developing nations thought of this pitch, considering their struggle to sell goods to the US without tariffs. Looking at the Bush record of corporate handouts to friends, the chances of his team doing a damned thing about changing subsidies are somewhere between slim and nil. This administration and other free traders are always so selective with when and where they want free trade.
